Almost all communication and internet lines are out of service in Chin State and the Chin foothills, including Hakha and Tetin, Sagaing Region, and Kalay, and an MPT SIM card is being bought for up to 45,000 kyats, as only a small MPT phone line can be used in Kalay. Locals in Kalay also reported that there is a shortage of SIM cards, making it impossible to buy them.
A local said, “Weredoo, Atom, and Mytel phone lines and internet lines have been down in Kale town for about 4 days now. MPT is the only one that can use Wi-Fi and a little data. The phone line is also intermittent. Now, MPT SIM cards are being sold for 40,000 to 45,000 kyats. Even that is no longer worth buying. It is reported that the equipment is so damaged that even MPT top-up cards have been cut off. I don’t know why the lines are cut off again.”
On April 11, Kale town also experienced a long period of outages in its telephone and internet lines. This has been happening frequently in Kale town.
In Chin State, Hakha town and other places are also experiencing outages in their telephone and internet lines. In Hakha, the capital of Chin State, the phone line has been intermittent since April. Hakha residents are using Wi-Fi and Starlink devices to access the internet.
