June 11.
Daw Pi Cing Lam Ning, a 32-year-old mother from Vaibhet village in Tonzang Township,Chin State, died today, June 11, at the Chulachanpu District Hospital in Manipur, India, after being poisoned by seasonal mushrooms. A pregnant woman from Tonzang Township also miscarried after eating seasonal mushrooms, according to locals.
“Last Wednesday, June 4, I was going to the mountain farm and I came across mushrooms and cooked them in my tent. In the evening, I started feeling sick with stomach ache. I was taking medicine at home and my condition gradually deteriorated, so I was sent to the Ci Kha Public Hospital on Saturday. From Ci Kha Public Hospital, I lost consciousness on Monday and was transferred to the Lamka (Chulachang) District Hospital. My liver was so damaged that I could not recover. I passed away in the morning of June 11 at the Lamka Hospital,” said a relative of the deceased.
“The reason the mushrooms came out early is probably because the rains came early. This year, we have heard of people eating the wrong mushrooms. This morning, a person who was looking for a cure died at the Lamka Hospital. Now, a pregnant woman from a nearby village also miscarried after eating the wrong mushrooms. She is being treated at the Lamka Hospital. She is also very hopeful,” said a women’s rights activist from Tonzang Township.
The deceased, Daw Pi Cing Lam Ning, was survived by her husband and two children. Her body was taken from Lamka town to Vaibhet village near Cikha town and will be buried on June 12.
