Zomi National Party Receives Official Approval to Form Political Party

Naypyitaw, June 25

— The Union Election Commission (UEC), under Myanmar’s military administration, has officially approved the formation of the Zomi National Party (ZNP) as a political party. The decision was announced on June 24 following a review confirming that the party’s application complies with the Political Parties Registration Law and related regulations.

The ZNP is one of 27 groups that have applied for party formation since the current registration process began. Among these, the Zomi National Party and the Pa-O National Unity Party were recently approved after meeting all necessary legal requirements.

Following the approval, the ZNP is required to formally register with the Commission within 30 days, in accordance with Article 7 of the Political Parties Registration Regulations. With this latest approval, the total number of parties granted permission to form stands at 19.

The Zomi National Party originally submitted its application to the UEC on April 30, 2025.

The party is expected to contest in the upcoming multi-party general election, which the military-led administration plans to hold over a one-month period beginning in the third and fourth weeks of December 2025 and continuing into the first and second weeks of January 2026. In Chin State, the ZNP will likely compete alongside the already registered Khumi National Party and the recently approved New Chinland Congress Party.
