Airstrike Hits KhaiKam Elephant Camp in Tedim Township: One Youth Killed, One Woman Seriously Injured

June 23.

On the afternoon of June 22 at approximately 4:00 p.m., an airstrike carried out by a Myanmar military aircraft targeted the KhaiKam Elephant Camp — a well-known resort area located around five miles from KhaiKam town in Tedim Township, Chin State. The attack resulted in the death of a 16-year-old male elephant caretaker and left a woman with severe injuries.

Local sources confirmed that although the nearby Kwe Chaung Kuu suspension bridge was within the vicinity of the airstrike, it did not sustain any damage.

“Around late yesterday afternoon, I observed an aircraft flying over the northern part of Khaing Kam. Shortly afterward, I heard the sound of multiple explosions, though I could not determine the exact location,” reported a resident of Khai Kam.

Due to the closure of the checkpoint to Kale town, local residents transported both the deceased and the injured woman toward PhaiPi village. The burial of the deceased took place in the morning of June 23. According to villagers, the injured woman sustained shrapnel wounds to her leg and is being carried on a stretcher to a location with accessible road conditions, where she will then be transferred to the Kale General Hospital.

The deceased youth had reportedly traveled alone to the area for work. Efforts to contact his parents have thus far been unsuccessful due to communication difficulties.

Contrary to circulating reports, the Kwe Chaung Kuu suspension bridge — a crucial link along the Kale-Tedim route — remains intact. A traveler who recently passed through the area confirmed, “The bridge was not damaged and remains passable. I personally crossed it on my way to Kale.”

The KhaiKam Elephant Camp, situated near the Kwe Chaung Kuu bridge, is a notable recreational site that drew frequent visitors prior to the escalation of the ongoing armed conflict in the region.
