The Mindat Township People’s Administration issued a press release today, April 17, to inform the public of remaining landmines in and around Mindat Town, and to refrain from visiting those areas for the time being. If you find mines or related items in your surroundings, please report them immediately and cooperate.
It was announced on March 6, 2025 that at least (2,000) mines, including landmines and anti-personnel mines, planted by the military council in Mindat Town have been cleared. Currently, mine clearance operations are ongoing, but there are still some areas that have not been cleared. Notices and warning signs have been posted to warn the public not to visit such dangerous areas, the Mindat Township People’s Administration announced.
(A) Areas with small amounts of landmines remaining in and around Mindat Town
- Along the road to the water treatment plant in Baung Thee Village and around the water treatment plant 2. Crossroads and forest roads before reaching Baung Thee Village Cemetery 3. On the right side of the road to Baung Thee Village, forest road west of the youth center 4. Around U Wama Thu Maung Park 5. Around the town entrance gate where the military council was stationed 6. Around the fire hill entering the town 7. Around the township immigration office 8. Between A.H.K. (2) and Tawa Daing Hill 9. Backyards of houses opposite the project office 10. Around the backyard of U Htan Yaw’s house near the Hong Family Hotel on the Third Ring Road 11. Around the cemetery at the crossroad below the Hlay Kaung Road intersection.
(b) Remaining landmines in and around Mindat town
- Around the small pagoda above the irrigation office and along the Mya Lay Pwint pagoda ridge. 2. Along the lower part of the 274 fence and the upper part of the Mindat – Matupi road. 3. Around the small football fields from the entrance of Taung Pulu Kyaung 0, 274 gate to the Mindat – Matupi road. 4. Around the irrigation office and Grace Church, Na Ta La (1), along the Mya Lay Pwint pagoda ridge. 5. Along the forest from the lower part of the Mya Lay Pwint pagoda hill to the upper part of the Mindat – Kan Petlet road, from the pine forest to the Pan O village junction (dangerous). 6. Around the 3 miles 5 farlons of the Chauk Taw village school compound from the Pan O village junction. 7. Around and around the 4 mile hill. 8. Between the district fire station and the university hill (dangerous). 9. 4 Mile Monastery above the university hill along the ridge to the left of the university hill to 14 miles. 10. 4 Mile Monastery along the Mindat – Matupi road to the 6 Mile Monastery.
Therefore, the public is advised not to travel to areas that have not been cleared of mines (especially) the above-mentioned areas and forests, not to touch or handle military council mines and explosives in villages and neighborhoods at all (at all), and if you find mines and related materials in your surroundings, immediately report them to the Chin Defense Force – Mindat and the Mindat Township People’s Administration. (c) Civilian casualties due to military council mines in Mindat during March 2025
- A woman in her 40s was seriously injured in the leg after stepping on a mine in a forest road in the western part of Mindat Township.
- In a village in Mindat Township, a 9-year-old boy was playing with a military-issued landmine when it exploded, causing serious injuries to his hand. The Mindat Township People’s Administration issued a press release today, April 17.
