June 12.
According to sources close to family members, AA officials have negotiated twice with the family members of a Khumi Chin woman, a local mother from Seint Sin village, Paletwa Township, Chin State, who was raped and nearly drowned by two Arakan Army (AA) soldiers, offering 10 million kyats in cash to settle the case.
A Paletwa local close to the victim’s family said, “Recently, around the first week of June, AA officials went to the family and negotiated, offering 10 million kyats in cash to settle the case. The family members said they would only be satisfied if the two perpetrators were sentenced to death.” It has also been reported through female activists in Paletwa Township that the Arakan Army (AA) has approached the rape victim’s family twice, offering 10 million kyats to settle the case.
On April 5, two Arakan Army (AA) soldiers raped a local Khumi Chin woman, a mother from Seint Sin village, Paletwa Township, and tried to drown her in a stream. The victim’s mother-in-law shouted for help, and the victim narrowly escaped death.
The AA spokesperson responded to some Rakhine media outlets on April 24 that the two Arakan Army (AA) members who raped and attempted to drown the woman had been arrested and were being investigated since the day of the crime. However, Paletwa locals say that there has been no transparent justice or action taken to date.
