May 11.
The National Unity Government (NUG) and the National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC) on May 10 issued a press release urging registered political parties not to participate in the illegitimate, illegitimate, sham elections that are being held to maintain the military regime’s grip on power and prolong the military dictatorship, ignoring the various sufferings of the people.
The Joint Working Committee of NUG and NUCC on the Fight against Illegal and Fraudulent Elections issued a statement on May 10 urging political parties to contest the elections, stating that they believe that if they contest the earthquake election under the Nargis Constitution, the political parties will realize that the people will consider them as supporters of the military regime’s illegal and fraudulent election, which is aimed at perpetuating the military dictatorship, ignoring all the suffering and wishes of the people.
The country’s political, economic, and social conditions have reached their worst state as a result of the military’s illegal attempt to seize power. In the more than four years since the military coup, the people in all regions have also been facing great hardships from the COVID-19 pandemic, floods, natural disasters, and war. In particular, airstrikes and heavy weapons attacks, arbitrary arrests, killings, burning of towns and villages, The NUG/NUCC statement stated that the entire population is subjected to various forms of violence, including forced recruitment of young people, on a daily basis.
Anyone with a human heart will understand that this is not the time to hold elections, as the 7.7-magnitude Sagaing earthquake, which has affected an additional 17.4 million people, is a time when elections should not be held. The military council, after the Sagaing earthquake, repeatedly announced that the elections would be held in December 2025, disregarding the wishes and suffering of the sovereign people of the country and putting their own egos first, the NUG/NUCC statement stated.
We hope that political parties will realize that the majority of the people hate the military council, which is trying to seize power illegally by annulling the 2020 election results without solid evidence. The NUG/NUCC statement stated that the Burmese people have repeatedly experienced the historical events and various irregularities in the military-led elections. Since the 2020 election results are still politically valid, creating another illegal election without the consent of the elected representatives and the people is a violation of democratic practice.
