A 22-year-old Chin woman from Chaung Nan Village, Minbya Township, Rakhine State, is being oppressed by a broker in Malaysia because there is no one to pick her up, according to survivors.
Six Chin women from Minbya Township and Ann Township left Yangon on May 5 and arrived in Malaysia on May 10 after being linked by brokers to work at a restaurant in Malaysia. The brokers did not place the women in the restaurant, but forced them to work as prostitutes at a KTV in Malaysia. The women did not want to do it, so they were oppressed by the broker.
Therefore, the women asked their acquaintances and relatives to help them pick up their friends and relatives from the broker, and one of them has not had anyone to pick her up, so she has remained in the broker’s house and is suffering various forms of oppression.
“When we left Yangon, there were 6 of us. 5 from Minpya, Lay Tu (Chin), and 1 from Ann Township. When we reached the Malay border, we were separated. We were a group of 3. We couldn’t communicate with the other 3. We were asked to work at a KTV. We could do it because we were pregnant. But we weren’t pregnant. We had to cuddle with men and offer them alcohol. We said we couldn’t do it. The broker got angry and confiscated our phones. He didn’t give us enough food. He didn’t give us water. He threatened to rape us and sell us at the border. If someone would buy us, we would have to pay double the broker’s fee, which is 16,000 Malay shillings. Two of the 3 of us were released because someone would buy us. One of us is still alive,” a Chin woman among those who were released told Chin World Media.
A Chin woman who was left at the broker’s house because there was no one to rescue her said she needed help to get out because her phone was confiscated and she couldn’t contact him. She added that she needed help to get out.
“Even when there were three of us, the broker threatened her with various threats and violence. Now that we are alone, I’m worried about how we will survive. The phone was confiscated and we can’t contact him. Where did he leave us? Did he send us to the border? I contacted the broker and he didn’t say anything. He just said that. When we were rescued, we were left on the side of the road with a bribe. The rescuer came to pick us up on the side of the road. Now, I want the remaining one to be rescued as soon as possible. I want him to be released,” one of the rescued Chin women told Chin World Media.
The rescued Chin women have called on Chin organizations and the Chin people in Malaysia to urgently help a 22-year-old Laytu (Chin) woman from Chaung Nan Village, Minbya Township, who is being threatened and oppressed by the broker.
