18 released from Kalay prison, no political prisoners included

In commemoration of the 1st day of the Myanmar New Year, April 17, 2025, the military council granted amnesty to prisoners in prisons across Myanmar. A former local political prisoner said that 18 prisoners were released from Kalay prison, including 3 women and 15 men, but no political prisoners were among the 18 released.

A former local political prisoner from Kalay said, “A total of 18 prisoners were released from Kalay prison, including 3 women and 15 men, and no political prisoners were among them. In the past, this was the same thing, and 505 people who were only a month or two away from being released were often released.”

Today, April 17, the 1st day of the Myanmar New Year, the military council announced that 4,893 prisoners in prisons across Myanmar were granted amnesty.

It was also announced that 4,893 prisoners in various prisons across Myanmar have been granted amnesty under Section 401, Sub-section (1) of the Criminal Procedure Code, with the condition that if they commit another crime, they will continue to serve the remaining sentences in addition to the current sentence.

In order to understand the love and goodwill of the state, before April 17, 2025, all those who have committed crimes under the Murder, Rape, Explosive Substances Act, the Unlawful Associations Act, the Weapons Act, The military council also announced that prisoners/prisoners who have been convicted of any offence under any existing law and are serving their sentences in various prisons/detention centers/camps, other than offences under the Arms Act 2023, offences under the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act, offences under the Natural Disaster Management Act, offences under the Anti-Terrorism Act and offences under the Anti-Corruption Act, have also been granted one-sixth of their sentences under Section 401, Sub-section (1) of the Penal Code.
